Licensing

Getting a firearms licence has a number of steps. Here we have a simplified version of the process involved. There are generally two types of firearms licences our members hold. You can apply for either or both depending on your interests. For more detailed information you should go to the Weapons Licencing web page.

Rifles (Category A & B)

Step 1

Have a genuine reason to obtain a Category A & B Firearms Licence. As a member of SSAA you can then list your genuine reason as Sports, Target Shooting, Recreation and Hunting. These approved activities for holding these Categories of licence.

Step 2

Undertake a Weapons Safety Course and it must be within 12 months of making application for your licence.

Step 3

You will need two passport size photos taken. These are needed for your application.

Step 4

When you have your passport photos and Safety Course certificate you can apply for your licence either online at the Weapons Licencing web site or in person at a police station.

The recommended way to apply is online.

Handgun (Category H)

A handgun licence is a little more difficult and requires a waiting period once you join an authorised Pistol Club.

Step 1

To join this ‘Approved Club’ you must submit a Form QP0515 to the Police Station. Weapons Licencing Branch will send you a letter authorising you to join the club.

Step 2

With that letter, you can then join the approved pistol club. You are now on probation for 6 months. During that time you have to attend a minimum of three club competition shoots. You must also undertake a Weapons Safety Course that covers Cat H.

Step 3

After your 6 months probation period is up you can ask for the club to provide you will approval to apply for your licence and the secretary will send you the form to include in your application.

Step 4

When you have your club approval you may apply for your Cat H licence.

You will need your club approval form, two passport photos, Safety Course certificate and a copy of your shoot participation card with the 3 competition shoots on it.

You can apply for your licence either online at the Weapons Licencing web site or in person at a police station.

The recommended way to apply is online.
